Two years ago today, my world – and my family's – was completely turned upside down with my breast cancer diagnosis. Sitting in that sterile doctor's office, hearing the words I never expected to hear, I felt the weight of fear, uncertainty, and everything in between. Cancer became part of my story that day, and I had no idea what to expect next.
There are certain dates you never forget after a cancer diagnosis. This one became part of my story, a story that started with fear and uncertainty but, over time, grew into one about strength and resilience too.
When you're diagnosed with cancer, it feels like everything changes. For many of us, it's a moment that shakes you to your core. You’re overwhelmed by emotions you don’t know how to express. Whether you’re recently diagnosed or have been living with it for a while, the impact on your mental and emotional health is undeniable. It’s not just physical; it’s psychological, emotional, and even spiritual. The trauma of a breast cancer diagnosis touches every part of who you are.
In those first moments after hearing the news, it’s as if the ground beneath you shifts. Your life, which once felt predictable and safe, now seems full of uncertainty. The initial shock is overwhelming, and your emotions swing from disbelief to anger and sadness. You’ll probably find yourself asking: "Why me?" "How will I cope?" "What will the future look like?"
It’s easy to forget that grief doesn’t just mean mourning the loss of life, it’s also mourning the life you had before. Your routines, your identity, your plans, and your dreams... they all get called into question. You might mourn your sense of control over your body and health, something you once took for granted.
The emotional weight of breast cancer is heavy. The fear of the unknown, coupled with the anxiety of treatment decisions, makes it feel like you’re constantly walking in a fog. Many of us with cancer feel like we’ve lost control over our lives. And that’s incredibly traumatic. The endless waiting for results, the ups and downs of treatment plans, and the constant flood of new information can leave you feeling like you’re stuck in a never-ending cycle of tension.
Let’s not overlook the physical toll of breast cancer treatments. Between surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, and hormone or targeted therapy, every treatment comes with its own set of challenges. Hair loss, nausea, fatigue, menopause, lymphedema, pain, and body image changes; each one adds to the trauma of the experience. And while the goal of treatment is always to heal, it’s equally important to acknowledge how it impacts our physical and mental well-being in the process.
But along the way, there are moments of strength and resilience too. Cancer becomes a journey; a complicated blend of challenges and victories. And trust me, you’re not in it alone. The support of family, friends, healthcare professionals and cancer charities can make all the difference in how you navigate this new reality.
A lot has changed since that day. The journey hasn’t been easy or straightforward, but I’m really proud of how far I’ve come. Stronger, wiser, and so incredibly grateful. There have been hard days, ugly cries, and moments that felt impossible... but also love, resilience, and more support than I could have ever imagined.
Navigating all of this can feel overwhelming, especially with the flood of information coming your way. It’s natural to want to start treatment as soon as possible, but take the time to fully understand your options and potential side effects before signing any consent forms. To help guide your discussions with your oncology team, here are some important questions to ask:
- What type of cancer do I have, and has it spread anywhere else? Is it hereditary? Understanding the specifics of your diagnosis can help you feel more in control and guide your treatment options.
- What is my prognosis, and what are the chances of recurrence? While no one can predict the future, having a clearer picture can help ease uncertainty and prepare you for what’s ahead.
- What are my treatment options, and how long will treatment last? Knowing the pros and cons of each option will help you make informed decisions with your doctor’s guidance.
- What is the goal of my treatment? Is it curative, or are we managing the disease? This can help set realistic expectations and give clarity on the treatment plan.
- What are the short-term and long-term side effects of my treatment plans? Understanding potential effects will help you prepare for physical changes and plan for symptom management.
- How can I take care of myself during treatment? Ask about nutrition, emotional and mental support, and coping strategies to help maintain your well-being.
- Are there any clinical trials or new treatments available for my condition? Clinical trials might offer alternative or cutting-edge treatment options worth exploring.
- What support services are available to me through the NHS or cancer charities during treatment? It’s important to explore options like counselling, support groups, and financial assistance to help you through this journey.
- What will follow-up care look like after treatment? Understanding your post-treatment plan, including check-ups and monitoring, will help you stay proactive about your health.
- What long-term effects should I expect from my treatment? Knowing any lasting impacts can help you prepare for the future and take steps to manage them effectively.
And most importantly, be kind to yourself. Healing, both physically and emotionally, takes time. Don’t hesitate to seek help when you need it. You’re never alone in this journey. Your oncology team is there to guide you, and there are countless resources available to support you. With the right care, you’ll find the strength to face the challenges ahead and reclaim your power, one day at a time.
