Looking Back, Moving Forward: My Cancerversary Journey

Two years ago today, my world – and my family's – was completely turned upside down
with my breast cancer diagnosis. Sitting in that sterile doctor's office, hearing the words I never expected to hear, I felt the weight of fear, uncertainty, and everything in between. Cancer became part of my story that day, and I had no idea what to expect next.

There are certain dates you never forget after a cancer diagnosis. This one became part of my story, a story that started with fear and uncertainty but, over time, grew into one about strength and resilience too. When you're diagnosed with cancer, it feels like everything changes. For many of us, it's a moment that shakes you to your core. You’re overwhelmed by emotions you don’t know how to express. Whether you’re recently diagnosed or have been living with it for a while, the impact on your mental and emotional health is undeniable. It’s not just physical; it’s psychological, emotional, and even spiritual. The trauma of a breast cancer diagnosis touches every part of who you are. In those first moments after hearing the news, it’s as if the ground beneath you shifts. Your life, which once felt predictable and safe, now seems full of uncertainty. The initial shock is overwhelming, and your emotions swing from disbelief to anger and sadness. You’ll probably find yourself asking: "Why me?" "How will I cope?" "What will the future look like?" It’s easy to forget that grief doesn’t just mean mourning the loss of life, it’s also mourning the life you had before. Your routines, your identity, your plans, and your dreams... they all get called into question. You might mourn your sense of control over your body and health, something you once took for granted. The emotional weight of breast cancer is heavy. The fear of the unknown, coupled with the anxiety of treatment decisions, makes it feel like you’re constantly walking in a fog. Many of us with cancer feel like we’ve lost control over our lives. And that’s incredibly traumatic. The endless waiting for results, the ups and downs of treatment plans, and the constant flood of new information can leave you feeling like you’re stuck in a never-ending cycle of tension. Let’s not overlook the physical toll of breast cancer treatments. Between surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, and hormone or targeted therapy, every treatment comes with its own set of challenges. Hair loss, nausea, fatigue, menopause, lymphedema, pain, and body image changes; each one adds to the trauma of the experience. And while the goal of treatment is always to heal, it’s equally important to acknowledge how it impacts our physical and mental well-being in the process. But along the way, there are moments of strength and resilience too. Cancer becomes a journey; a complicated blend of challenges and victories. And trust me, you’re not in it alone. The support of family, friends, healthcare professionals and cancer charities can make all the difference in how you navigate this new reality.

A lot has changed since that day. The journey hasn’t been easy or straightforward, but I’m really proud of how far I’ve come. Stronger, wiser, and so incredibly grateful. There have been hard days, ugly cries, and moments that felt impossible... but also love, resilience, and more support than I could have ever imagined. Navigating all of this can feel overwhelming, especially with the flood of information coming your way. It’s natural to want to start treatment as soon as possible, but take the time to fully understand your options and potential side effects before signing any consent forms. To help guide your discussions with your oncology team, here are some important questions to ask:
  1. What type of cancer do I have, and has it spread anywhere else? Is it hereditary? Understanding the specifics of your diagnosis can help you feel more in control and guide your treatment options.
  2. What is my prognosis, and what are the chances of recurrence? While no one can predict the future, having a clearer picture can help ease uncertainty and prepare you for what’s ahead.
  3. What are my treatment options, and how long will treatment last? Knowing the pros and cons of each option will help you make informed decisions with your doctor’s guidance.
  4. What is the goal of my treatment? Is it curative, or are we managing the disease? This can help set realistic expectations and give clarity on the treatment plan.
  5. What are the short-term and long-term side effects of my treatment plans? Understanding potential effects will help you prepare for physical changes and plan for symptom management.
  6. How can I take care of myself during treatment? Ask about nutrition, emotional and mental support, and coping strategies to help maintain your well-being.
  7. Are there any clinical trials or new treatments available for my condition? Clinical trials might offer alternative or cutting-edge treatment options worth exploring.
  8. What support services are available to me through the NHS or cancer charities during treatment? It’s important to explore options like counselling, support groups, and financial assistance to help you through this journey.
  9. What will follow-up care look like after treatment? Understanding your post-treatment plan, including check-ups and monitoring, will help you stay proactive about your health.
  10. What long-term effects should I expect from my treatment? Knowing any lasting impacts can help you prepare for the future and take steps to manage them effectively.
A breast cancer diagnosis doesn’t just vanish after treatment ends. It’s an ongoing journey, one that requires patience, support, and understanding from those around you. The more you know about your diagnosis and treatment options, the better prepared you’ll be for the road ahead.

And most importantly, be kind to yourself. Healing, both physically and emotionally, takes time. Don’t hesitate to seek help when you need it. You’re never alone in this journey. Your oncology team is there to guide you, and there are countless resources available to support you. With the right care, you’ll find the strength to face the challenges ahead and reclaim your power, one day at a time.

Welcome to My Journey: Finding Strength Through Sharing

Hey there, and welcome to My World My Life , my little corner of the internet. After what felt like an endless process, I’ve finally moved all my old blog posts from their outdated home to this fresh new space. It wasn’t easy, balancing this with treatment, work, and family life, but with a little help from my family, I made sure every post made it over intact. No missing entries, no broken links (because let’s be honest, that totally would have happened). Now that everything is in place, I couldn’t be more excited for what’s ahead. This blog isn’t just about sharing my journey; it’s about creating a space where we can connect, support one another, and navigate life’s unexpected twists together. One of those twists came in the form of breast cancer. One moment, I was going about my usual routine, and the next, I was sitting in a doctor’s office, hearing words that didn’t feel real. In an instant, my world flipped upside down. My days became a whirlwind of appointments, treatments, and ...

Navigating Work and Life While Managing Breast Cancer

When cancer enters your life, it feels like a sudden storm, disrupting every aspect of your existence with its demands and emotional toll. Yet, despite the overwhelming nature of such a diagnosis, it doesn't have to completely define your existence. Maintaining some semblance of normal life, be it through work, relationships, or hobbies, can be a source of strength and continuity. However, everyone's experience with cancer is uniquely theirs. While some might find their daily routines and priorities wholly transformed, others, like myself, strive to weave treatment into an existing tapestry of responsibilities. The role of a support system, mental health resources, and personal perspective cannot be understated in navigating these challenges. My own journey took a dramatic turn right before my surgery for breast cancer, requiring me to step back from a demanding job as Head of Delivery at the Greater London Authority. It wasn't just about taking time off; my role demanded a...

Chicken Tagine with Preserved Lemons and Olives

This dish holds a special place in my heart. I first learned how to make it from my Algerian friend’s mum, and from that moment on, I was hooked. There’s something magical about the way the warm spices, tender chicken, tangy preserved lemons, and briny olives come together... it’s the kind of meal that fills your kitchen with the most incredible aroma and makes you want to gather around the table. Of course, I couldn’t resist adding my own little twist. I like to throw in a handful of raisins for a hint of sweetness. It’s not exactly traditional, and my friend gave me a sceptical look the first time I did it, but I love how the subtle sweetness balances the bold flavours. If you’ve never made a tagine before, don’t worry. you don’t actually need a special tagine pot to enjoy this dish. A good heavy-bottomed pan or Dutch oven works just as well. At its core, a tagine is really just a slow-cooked stew, layered with rich spices and sometimes a touch of dried fruit or nuts.  So, whethe...
